The long drawn out saga of putting in place countywide bye-laws for burial grounds in Mayo was finally concluded on Monday when the members of Mayo County Council approved the new bye-laws by a vote of 15-7 after a number of last minute amendments were proposed from the chamber floor.

Following on from the chaotic scenes that played out at the September meeting of Mayo County Council, where Independent councillor Frank Durcan stayed on his feet and continued to talk over other councillors as the Cathaoirleach tried to get on with the order of business, Mayo County Council has this week responded to one of the issues Cllr Durcan raised about the purchase of lands outside Castlebar, through a statment issued by county secrectary John Condaon.

The spectacle of local government in operation descended into farce at last Monday’s meeting of Mayo County Council, which saw one councillor stand on his feet and continue to talk over the other members as the Cathaoirleach tried to get on with the business of the meeting.

In what could possibly be their final budget the members of Castlebar Town Council voted to reduce the commercial rate by one per cent for the coming year. The members held their annual budget meeting on Tuesday afternoon and following a two hour debate they were able to agree the budget for 2013. The commercial new rate for the town will now be 70.23 in the euro, down from 70.94 last year.
